JAPANESE FLUTE CONCERT BY REISON KURODA 25.03.2024

The Feuerle Collection is happy to announce an exceptional music performance with Japanese artist Reison Kuroda 黒田鈴尊 playing the shakuhachi 尺八 , a traditional Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute, on March 25, at 7:30pm, at The Feuerle Collection, organized in association with Doppelmond.

Reison Kuroda opens this year’s performance program at The Feuerle Collection presenting a wide range of traditional Japanese music and contemporary pieces. He will lead the audience into a multifaceted and captivating world of sound, with the special aesthetics of the Japanese bamboo flute.

Reison Kuroda studied shakuhachi with Reibo Aoki and Shoji Aoki in Japan. He graduated from Waseda University in 2007, with a degree in Human Sciences, and also successfully completed a master’s degree in Japanese traditional music at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. He has already played many world premieres, e.g. by Claude LedouxDenis LevaillantKazutomo Yamamoto, and others. In 2019, he was one of the „Japanese Cultural Envoys“ and performed in 16 cities in 6 countries. He was awarded the top prize at the Hidenori Tone Traditional Japanese Instruments Contest 2016 and the World Shakuhachi Competition in London 2018.

The shakuhachi is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute made by drilling four holes on the front and one hole on the back. Due to its simple design, the shakuhachi produces a sound mixed with air noises. The instrument as we know it was developed around the 16th and 17th centuries and it has kept its tradition and repertoire until today. It was originally used in a Zen Buddhist group as a ritual tool with which the priest attempted to gain clarity about the world. The term “suizen 吹禅”, which refers to the state of Zen reached by playing the shakuhachi, and the phrase „itton jobutsu 一音成仏“, which describes the goal of achieving enlightenment with a single sound – are the most important concepts of shakuhachi music.

Musical pieces

大和調子 Yamato choshi (traditional Japanese piece);
奥州薩慈  Ōshu sashi (traditional Japanese piece);
Sōmei Satō, „風の曲 Kaze no kyoku (Music of the winds)” (1979);
Erika Kimura, „Ultrafiltration” (2018);
Henry Cowell, „The Universal Flute” (1946);
Hendrik Rungelrath, „Everything we could” (2024, UA);

Tomoya Yokokawa, „彼岸へ To the beyond“ (2020);
Tomoya Yokokawa, „見えない月 Invisible moon“ (2009/2022, UA).

Doppelmond, an ensemble founded in 2022 by composer Tomoya Yokokawa, seeks to explore the fusion of contemporary music and traditional Japanese instruments, resulting in a provocative dialogue in two aspects: the Japanese tradition is experimentally reinterpreted, and the compositional languages and aesthetics of contemporary music are challenged by the specific sonority of Japanese instruments. Doppelmond organises concert series and commissioned music compositions every year to expand the repertoire for traditional Japanese instruments in the contemporary music scene.

Founded in 2016 by Désiré Feuerle and Sara Puig, The Feuerle Collection is an interdisciplinary art institution located in a former telecommunications bunker from WWII, renovated by John Pawson. Its cultural program revolves around Désiré Feuerle’s private collection and vision, combining Imperial Chinese furniture, from the Han to the early Qing dynasty (200 BC–17th C), early Khmer sculptures, from 7th–13th C, and international contemporary art in a total artwork of groundbreaking juxtapositions. The institutional cultural activities encompass temporary art shows, artist talks, dance performances, concerts, film screenings, incense ceremonies, fashion shows, and gong baths.

The concert is supported by GEMA-StiftungJaDe-Stiftung and Japan Foundation.
