<\/div>[vc_column_text]We are happy to announce the second\u00a0Shod\u014d<\/strong>\u00a0(\u66f8\u9053) calligraphy workshop, hosted by The Feuerle Collection,\u00a0and held by Okinawan artist and calligrapher Sugano Matsusaki, on June 12, 2024, as a part of our program of\u00a0activities\u00a0curated by D\u00e9sir\u00e9 Feuerle, and\u00a0dedicated to young Berlin based Asian artists.<\/p>\n

The first sold-out workshop in January this year focused on the creation of a good luck\u00a0Kakizome<\/strong>\u00a0(\u66f8\u304d\u521d\u3081), a\u00a0character containing a new year\u2019s resolution or wish for 2024, and it generated a high demand for a continuation.<\/p>\n

This time, the workshop will focus on the discovery of seasonal beauty through the reading of\u00a0Haiku<\/strong>\u00a0(\u4ff3\u53e5)\u00a0poems \u2013\u2013a form of traditional Japanese poetry with three verses \u2013\u2013 and on studying and reproducing their\u00a0particular style of writing, which is curvy, airy, and gentle. Through this workshop, participants will be invited to\u00a0experience how Shod\u014d techniques can transmit the mood of certain words onto paper.<\/p>\n

The class is suitable for beginners as well as for intermediate-level practitioners. Participants will produce their\u00a0own calligraphy piece.<\/p>\n

Shod\u014d\u00a0is a writing practice originating in China during the Tang dynasty (618 AD – 906 AD), which was brought\u00a0to Japan by Zen monks, and deeply influenced Japanese calligraphy. Ever since, it has kept continuously\u00a0evolving, also thanks to the consistent exchanges between the Chinese and the Japanese world, and it still plays\u00a0a significant role in several contemporary cultures.
\nSho\u00a0stands for \u2018writing\u2019 and\u00a0do\u00a0for a \u2018path\u2019 \u2013\u2013 more precisely, \u2018the path of devoting oneself to one thing\u2019. In fact, the\u00a0dedication to the process of learning represents one the most important aspects of its philosophy.<\/p>\n

For Sugano Matsusaki\u2019s\u00a0shod\u014d\u00a0workshop, The Feuerle Collection will provide the participants with all essential\u00a0writing materials, and tools: Paper, brush, ink and ink pond, the so called\u00a0bungu-shiho, \u2018four treasures of\u00a0stationery\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(\u6587\u5177\u56db\u5b9d).\u00a0Sayu tea<\/strong>\u00a0(\u767d\u6e6f), the traditional boiled water<\/strong>\u00a0will also be served.<\/p>\n

Sugano Matsusaki<\/strong>\u00a0is a calligrapher from Okinawa, Japan, with 25 years of experience. She learned from\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Seian Morishima<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Mr. Shuseki Ogawa<\/strong>, and she has been exploring her own calligraphy based on traditional\u00a0techniques. She traces the lines of legendary Chinese and Japanese calligraphers in history, striving to recreate\u00a0their perfect line and timeless beauty. Through intensive and repetitive transcribing, she engages in an intimate\u00a0dialogue between history and herself. She embraces the philosophy that the pursuit of perfect beauty and line\u00a0are fundamental aspects of calligraphy, also recognizing that a unique movement of the ink emerges through the\u00a0brushwork\u2019s imperfections and idiosyncrasies.<\/p>\n

This workshop\u00a0is suitable for adults and young persons aged 12 and over. We\u00a0don\u2019t grant admittance to persons under the age of 12.<\/p>\n
