Reison Kuroda opens this year\u2019s performance program at The Feuerle Collection presenting a wide range of traditional Japanese music and contemporary pieces. He will lead the audience into a multifaceted and captivating world of sound, with the special aesthetics of the Japanese bamboo flute.<\/p>\n

Reison Kuroda<\/strong>\u00a0studied\u00a0shakuhachi<\/em>\u00a0with Reibo Aoki and Shoji Aoki in Japan. He graduated from\u00a0Waseda University\u00a0<\/strong>in 2007, with a degree in Human Sciences, and also successfully completed a master’s degree in Japanese traditional music at\u00a0Tokyo University of the Arts<\/strong>\u00a0in 2013. He has already played many world premieres, e.g. by\u00a0Claude Ledoux<\/strong>,\u00a0Denis Levaillant<\/strong>,\u00a0Kazutomo Yamamoto,<\/strong>\u00a0and others. In 2019, he was one of the „Japanese Cultural Envoys<\/em>“ and performed in 16 cities in 6 countries. He was awarded the top prize at the\u00a0Hidenori Tone Traditional Japanese Instruments Contest\u00a0<\/strong>2016 and the\u00a0World Shakuhachi Competition<\/strong>\u00a0in London 2018.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0shakuhachi<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute\u00a0made by drilling four holes on the front and one hole on the back. Due to its simple design, the shakuhachi produces a sound mixed with air noises. The\u00a0instrument\u00a0<\/em>as we know it was developed around the 16th<\/sup>\u00a0and 17th centuries and it has kept its tradition and repertoire until today. It was originally used in a Zen Buddhist group as a ritual tool with which the priest attempted to gain clarity about the world. The term \u201csuizen<\/em>\u00a0\u5439\u7985\u201d, which refers to the state of Zen reached by playing the shakuhachi, and the phrase „itton jobutsu\u00a0<\/em>\u4e00\u97f3\u6210\u4ecf“, which describes the goal of achieving enlightenment with a single sound \u2013 are the most important concepts of shakuhachi music.<\/p>\n

Doppelmond<\/strong><\/a>, an ensemble founded in 2022 by composer\u00a0Tomoya Yokokawa<\/strong>, seeks to explore\u00a0the fusion of contemporary music and traditional Japanese instruments,\u00a0resulting in a provocative dialogue in two aspects: the Japanese tradition is experimentally\u00a0reinterpreted, and the compositional languages and aesthetics of contemporary music are\u00a0challenged by the specific sonority of Japanese instruments. Doppelmond organises concert\u00a0series and commissioned music compositions every year to expand the repertoire for traditional\u00a0Japanese instruments in the contemporary music scene.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2016 by D\u00e9sir\u00e9 Feuerle and Sara Puig,\u00a0The Feuerle Collection<\/strong>\u00a0is an interdisciplinary art institution located in a former telecommunications bunker from WWII, renovated by John Pawson. Its cultural program revolves around D\u00e9sir\u00e9 Feuerle\u2019s private collection and vision, combining Imperial Chinese furniture, from the Han to the early Qing dynasty (200 BC\u201317th C), early Khmer sculptures, from 7th\u201313th C, and international contemporary art in a total artwork of groundbreaking juxtapositions. The institutional cultural activities encompass temporary art shows, artist talks, dance performances, concerts,\u00a0film screenings, incense ceremonies, fashion shows, and gong baths.<\/p>\n

The concert is supported by\u00a0GEMA-Stiftung<\/a>,\u00a0JaDe-Stiftung<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Japan Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This performance \u00a0is suitable for adults and young persons aged 16 and over. We\u00a0don’t grant admittance to person under the age of 16.<\/p>\n
